Mini Miners!

Wednesday 26 Sep 2018 19:08pm

Today, we went on our first school trip of the year to the National Coal Mining Museum. When we arrived, we went to see the pit ponies. Everyone was very impressed with Finn, who was over 20 hands high! As they were having an early lunch, everyone measured how many hands high they were. None of us were quite as high as Finn! Next, we went to the bath house to see where the miners changed and washed. None of us were impressed with the old tin bath or the cold showers they had to use! It was then our turn to go down the mine. We put on our hats, turned on our lights and headed over 100 metres down the mine shaft. Unfortunately, no cameras were allowed down so there are no photos to show you. We learnt what it would have been like for child and adult miners, who could spend up to 12 hours a day down the cold, dark and dirty mine. Everyone took part in challenges and games as we explored the mine. We all agreed how lucky we are to not have to be miners anymore at 7 years old! Everyone all had a great time and learnt so much about life as a miner. We will use this to help us with our topic work over the next few weeks.
