Ancient Egyptian Artefacts

Wednesday 07 Oct 2015 23:00pm

The children had a great time this week.  We were fortunate enough to arrange for a visit from Kelly from the Wakefield Museum and brought lots of ancient Egyptian artefacts with her.

We learned that the Egyptians loved their gods and that many were depicted with an animal head and human body.  We even had some papyrus paper to design one of our own.  Wearing gloves, we were allowed to handle some of the artefacts and used magnifying glasses to look at the details carefully.  Our favourite was the mummified crocodile.  Was it smiling contentedly?  We found it amazing to think that the Egyptians had no electricity and used oils lamps instead and we were intrigued by the idea that they took treasures, jewels and musical instruments into their tombs in the hope that they would help them in the afterlife.

When asked what they would take with them, one child said her bed, whilst others thought life (or death) without an ipad, computer or x box was unimaginable!

Thanks to everyone who supported us by making a contribution to the costs of the workshop.  Your generosity means that we will be able to offer experiences such as this as the year unfolds.
