Sandal Magna Community Academy

Didn't we have a lovely time, they day we went to Magna?

Well, the day finally arrived and we ran into school excited, but prepared to have a full day out as we launched our new topic - Extreme Weather.  And it certainly lived up to our expectations.
We were divided into four groups.  Some of us began with the history of steel.  We made connections straight away with last term's topic when we recognised images from the forties and the war effort.
Mrs Sketchley said we should go and see Big Bertha fire up.  Just when we thought it was getting deadly boring, the mock furnace reached temperature and we saw what it would have looked like when it melted down thousands of tonnes of scrap metal to make new cars, cans and aeroplanes at temperatures in excess of 500 degrees Centigrade - we knew straight away that metal was turning from a solid to a liquid, so it dovetailed nicely with our Science Topic - States of Matter - and we've only had one lesson!
The fire exhibition took us to the land of tornadoes as we saw a kerosene tornado - rather like the artwork we have done.  Wow!
The earth moved for us in another exhibition and we had a great time using cranes, pullies and gears.  Further connections were made with the year 3 topic rocks and soils.
But our favourite exhibitions by far were those in air and water.  We were in our element!  Our hair stood on end in the wind tunnel and we also used far more sophisticated telephones than the string ones we made last term in Science. There was also a practical demonstration of the water cycle which we will be covering later this term.
Before we knew it, the time had come to return, tired and happy (and slightly damp), to school.
Thanks as ever to Mr Carver, Mrs Swailes, Mrs Clifton, Mr Johnson, Mrs Ahmed, Mrs Pratt and Mrs Sketchley.  Without you, it wouldn't happen.  Enjoy the photos!
