States of matter

Welcome back to our last term in Year 4. How fast it has gone! There are a few changes this term. We now have PE on Mondays with Miss Abernethy, so please make sure you have your PE kit (indoor and outdoor) on these days. We would hate you to miss out on the fun!
Our science topic this term is states of matter. We looked at classification keys again and tried to sort materials into solids, liquids or gases. It was quite tricky, but one group managed it and even explained that heating or cooling is often used to change a material from one state to another. We know that materials are made from particles. In solids, they are tightly packed together and fairly rigid. Solids can only change their shape if a force is applied. In liquids, the particles are not so tightly packed, though they are still connected. Liquids take their shape from the container they are held in. In gases, the particles can move randomly. We divided into groups and the rest of the class had to guess whether we were a solid, a liquid or a gas. Can you guess what we were from the pictures?
