The one where we showed true British spirit!

And the week when we won SAM for having the top attendance in the school. We are definitely excited about the attendance award. Those circus skills could come in handy!
Well what a day out our trip to Eden Camp turned out to be. The cold and wet weather meant that we really got a sense of just how difficult it must have been to live in Britain in austere times during the Second World War. Year 4 bravely went where others might have feared to tread.
We are only in the second week of our topic work and already the children recognise propaganda posters and the powerful messages they share. They have insight into War Time London in the middle of a raid and have learned about young children being evacuated from cities and large towns, travelling alone and leaving without knowing when they might ever see their loved ones again. They have begun to understand the unique position that Britain (as an island) was in and the need for rationing as the German U boats attacked merchant convoys bringing supplies. Watch this space because they have even planned a war time meal based on rationed food and begun a unit of English which will see them writing a letter to a real evacuee who has agreed to answer their questions.
Thursday, 14th January, was a cold, testing, but exciting day. The children of Year 4 took it all in their stride. They seized the opportunities, were great ambassadors for their school, enjoyed their lunch and even learned a few war time songs.....though I am sure the judge was biased and the teachers' singing was not THAT bad. Thank you for supporting a memorable day out. We are tired, but we had a ball.
Thank you, too, to Mrs Jackson, Miss Corbett, Mrs Swailes, Mrs Skolas, Mrs Pratt, Mr Dixon, SAM, the dog, and Mr Johnson. Without you, we could not have gone.
