The sound of silence in science

Monday 06 Mar 2017 17:39pm

In our science lessons, our understanding of sound and how it is made and travels is deepening.
This week, we began to look at insulators and how to dampen annoying sounds when they are a distraction.  We had 5 different materials : foil, polystyrene, cotton wool, fabric and bubble wrap and investigated which one was the most effective sound insulator keeping a ticking clock as a constant.  We tried to make it a fair test, but using whispering voices proved challenging as we love science experiments.
There was a bit of debate about whether polystyrene or cotton wool was the best insulator.  However, we clearly have budding scientists in our midst as some suggested putting the two materials together for maximum effect.  Was that cheating?  Take a look at the photos and decide.
