Going on a leaf hunt...

Friday 21 Oct 2016 15:05pm

On Friday 21st October, Mr Smith's Maths set went outside to do an investigation, using leaves. The school playground has plenty of fallen leaves, so we went to collect some. Once we had collected them in (some groups had over 180!) we bought them back to main playground. Here we sorted them into groups, depending on which tree they came from. We counted them, then added them up.

Back in class, we looked at the fractions of leaves we had per group. Plus the ratio of leaves to each other. We were surprised to find that the bigger piles of leaves were not always the most. We then looked at simplifying the fractions we had found and also seeing if any of them numbers we had were special. One group had some prime numbers. We also found squared and cubed numbers. A very enjoyable lesson!
