Standedge Tunnel trip.

Wednesday 25 May 2016 13:44pm

on Monday May 23rd Year 6 headed to a lovely place called Standedge Tunnel in Marsden. Standedge is the longest canal tunnel in Britain and is also the highest and deepest.

Everyone who went on the trip enjoyed it very much and we all learned a lot. On the way to the museum we walked along the canal bank and Mrs Shepherd explained how locks work and all about mooring boats.

When we arrived we met some museum staff and our class split in half. One group stayed inside and enjoyed a workshop about water safety. We learned that "SAFE" stands for:
Stay
Away
From (the)
Edge.
Our class thought that the lady was very polite and she did a great job making sure we knew how to keep ourselves safe.

Whilst we did that, the other half enjoyed a trip on a boat through the tunnel and then we swapped over. Our host on the boat, Matt, entertained us with amazing facts and stories about the history of the tunnel and at one point ALL the lights on the boat were extinguished and we screamed because it was so dark.
